Programming A Comcast Remote – Part 2
How To Program the Silver Comcast Remote
I recently wrote a tutorial on how to program the Comcast remote that comes with the little black box that was required after Comcast upgraded their system. If that is the remote you need to program you can find the instructions for that remote here:
This is the silver remote that comes standard with all Comcast boxes.
This remote can be used to remote control your TV as well as your cable box. It can also be programmed for one other device for a total of three. It is designed to serve as a universal remote so that you only need one. There are two methods to program the remote. The first is to automatically search for the correct code and the second is to manually program the remote using manufacturer’s codes. Both methods are explained below.
Auto Program Method:
1. Turn on your TV.
2. On the silver remote, press the TV button once. This button is located at the very top of the remote.
If you are trying to set up a device on the Auxiliary channel, such as a DVD or VCR player, then press the “Aux” button instead of the “TV” button.
3. Then press and hold the “Setup” button until the “TV” button flashes twice. Then release the “Setup” button.
4. Enter the following digits: 991. You should see the TV button flash twice.
5. If you are searching for a DVD or VCR code enter the digits 992 and you should see the Aux button flash twice.
6. Press the “Power” button once. Then aim the remote and the TV and start pressing the “CH +” button at a medium pace until the TV turns off. (Don’t press it too fast!!!) There have been times when I was in a hurry and was pressing the key too fast. What happened is that I couldn’t react in time when the TV turned off and actually hit the key a couple more times. This ended up giving me the wrong code and I had to start all over again. So, I know it seems to take a while sometimes, but it’s better to go at a medium pace so that you get it right the first time!
7. Once the TV turns off, press the “Setup” button once to lock in the code. You should see the “TV” button flash twice.
Manual Program Method:
1. Turn your TV or device on.
2. On the Comcast remote, press the “TV” key once. If you are trying to program a DVD player or other device press the “Aux” key instead.
3. Press and hold the “Setup” key until the “TV” key (or Aux key) blinks twice and then release the “Setup” key.
4. Find the codes for your TV. They are listed on the back of the instructions that came with your remote. If you don’t have this list, I have posted it here on this site:
The codes for Audio Amplifiers is located here:
The codes for DVD Players is located here:
5. Once you have found the code(s) for your device write them down for the next step.
6. If there is more than one code listed start with the first one and enter the 5-digit code. If you do this step correctly you will see the “TV” key blink twice. If you do this step incorrectly you will see the “TV” key display one long blink. If this happens you will have to start over from Step 2.
7. Aim the remote control and your TV and press the “Power” button once. If this is the correct code, your TV will shut off. If it doesn’t then repeat steps 2 thru 6 using the next code in line.
Your silver Comcast remote should now be able to control the power, volume and channels on your TV and you can hide the remote that came with your TV. One thing to keep in mind, is that when you hit the “All On” button you have to leave the remote aimed at the TV and cable box for a few seconds in order for it to turn off each device. You will see each device button light up as the remote turns this device on or off. For example, when you hit the “All On” button you should see the TV button light up and then the TV turn on, then you will see the Cable button light up and then the cable box turn on and so forth. I hope that you have found this information useful. If so, please feel free to leave comments.

I have the new remote control. It will turn my TV off, change the volume, and channels but it will not turn the TV on. What do I need to do to get it to turn the TV on. I would like to put away the old remote and just rely on a single remote. Thanks, Paula
Hey Paula,
Yeah, the programming can get kind of funky at times. I’ve ran into this problem before and the solution is usually to manually program the remote. If you’ll let me know what brand and model of TV you have I’ll help you track down the proper code for it.
Comcast remote died and replaced. Can turn cable on and change channels. Must use TV remote for everything else. The previous identical remote did all, but could not turn tv on. The list of Comcast codes does not show my tv.
NIKO (one K is correct) OTP-3211W LCD.
Can you help me? Thank you
Have you tried using the 9-9-1 auto-programming method?
Do you know how to program these remotes to control the comcast DTA box? I got a free box from my uncle, but he lost the remote. My sister gave me her spare silver remote to control the little black box, but it does not work. Thanks.
Hey Ryan,
Try using the following code, 01982. I would recommend programming it to the AUX button.
Let me know if you run into any problems.
I have tried the codes for a RCA TV and I have tried the 991 method nothing works.
Hi Judy,
If you’ll send me the model number of your TV I’ll be happy to help you track down the proper code.
Do you happen to know the code so I can program one of the silver remotes to operate one of the little black boxes. I have tons of silver remotes, but cannot find my little black remote anywhere. Thanks.
Hey Gina,
The standard silver remote that we are all so familiar with will not control the DTA, but the newer “platinum” remotes will.
I use the AUX button to turn my Pioneer receiver on and off. I use an HDMI cable to get HDTV and audio to my receiver and the converter box vol-up and vol-down does not actually control the volume … instead, I must control the volume using my receiver. This may be petty, but it’s a hassle to press the AUX button to control the volume then press CABLE to put the silver remote back in a state to control the comcast box. There used to be a way to “unlock” the volume button and re-program it so that when the remote control is in CABLE mode, the volume botton actually controls another device (not the converter box). I’d like the volume button to control my receiver (Pioneer) when the remote is in CABLE mode. IS THIS POSSIBLE?
I found the answer at:

Great info John, thanks for posting the link!!
I not to mention my friends were analyzing the great tips on your site and then all of a sudden came up with a horrible feeling I had not expressed respect to you for them. All of the boys are actually so stimulated to see them and have now sincerely been taking pleasure in these things. I appreciate you for turning out to be indeed helpful and for deciding upon some wonderful resources most people are really wanting to be informed on. My honest regret for not saying thanks to sooner.
this worked! thank you!
You’re welcome!!
Greetings! I have gleaned plenty of info for my remote from your site, and must express my gratitude for your efforts and time.
I do have one issue I have been unable to resolve as of yet. The silver remote currently runs my DVD player and TV (both JVC, and the cable, of course. When I’m in cable mode and use the volume key, the TV unfortunately displays the volume bar much longer that I would like. I try using the “Exit” button to make the volume bar go away, but the remote is in cable mode and does not respond to my bidding. If I want to make it go away, it’s either grab the original TV remote or switch the silver remote to TV mode, but by then the volume bar has usually gone away on its own. I’m wondering if it’s possible to tie the exit button to the TV while still controlling the cable box. Unfortunately, the TV itself has no settings to adjust the volume bar time or display.
Any suggestions? I would really appreciate any fixes you could suggest.
I’m not sure if it’s possible to do what you are suggesting. You may want to try and program a second “Exit” button or maybe even a macro. There are some buttons on the remote that are “locked”, so you would still have the original.
If that can’t be done, then you may just have to deal with the volume bar until it goes away.
is it possibe to program a silver comcast remote to a control the comcast dta box?
i forgot to mention that i can change the volume and turn my tv on and off but i cant change the channel.
Hey David,
As far as I know, the standard silver remote cannot be programmed to the DTA box, but I have heard that the newer “platinum” remotes can. You might be able to trade your silver one in.
i just got the platinum one. how do i program it
hey i have a platinum remote and i was wondering if i can use it to watch ondemand on the black DTA box. if i can, how do i program it?
Sorry David. Unfortunately you can not watch On Demand through the DTA box. The box is simply a digital to analog converter. It does not have any advanced features.
Have just purchased a new Toshiba DCT2224/1661.ACDEGJ (really?). My silver remote worked perfectly for the former TV, and still controls the cable box – but when I try to program it for the new TV by pressing the TV button and setup button until the TV button blinks twice – it never blinks twice! What can I do?
Got my fingers on the wrong keys when putting in the model number for the TV. :-/ It’s DCT2224/1661/ACDEGK according to the sticker on the back.
Hi Sherrie,
That’s odd that the TV button never blinks twice. Without being able to put the remote in “program” mode, you won’t be able to setup your new TV. I’ll look into your model number.
I have the silver remote from comcast with the red select button. My TV is an Olevia, Model 232-S12. I tried the 3 codes suggested. The middle one, 11230, will turn the tv off only to a grey screen but not completely off. From there it will turn it back on but it is never a black, completely off screen. Also it does not allow me to control the volume. I also was not clear if you use only the “power” button that is in the 5 selections at top of remote, which I did, or use the AUX button. I do have a DVD box also and did not know if that had to be programed separtely to work with the TV.
I mean to say the ALL ON buton and not the AUS button for Power
I gave you a previous email address in the 2 previous comments. Your comment screen is so light I can hardly read what I am submitting. Thought you might be able to fix.
Hi Dot,
a) Have you tried the auto-programming method? Usually it’s better to try that first and let the remote find the appropriate code.
b) To answer your first question. Yes, you will want to use the “Power” button that is among the five selections. You should never attempt to program the “All On” button.
c) If you have a DVD box, it would be best to put that on the “AUX” button.
If you have any more questions, please leave another comment or use the contact page. I’d be glad to help!
Oh, and thanks for the heads up about the comment screen. I’m actually doing a redesign of the site, which should be up pretty soon!
What is the Comcast DVR remote code for an LG LHT734DVD/CD home theatre/surround sound system
I can get it to turn off and on – but the volume button does not work
I am having the same issue with LG surround sound – power works but volume does not…did you get a solution?
Hi Christy,
If you’ll send the make and model of your device, I’ll see if I can find a code for you.
LG LHT854 DVD Receiver/Surround Sound unit
Hi Christy,
Try 20741.
After reading all the above I’m more than certain I’ve arrived at the correct site.
I have a Philips DVD model DVP3140/37, which I’m trying to program into my silver Comcast remote. With the DVD on and hitting aux then setup, getting the double blink then entering the code (I’ve tried many including the ones above) all codes give me that double blink but then nothing at all occurs when hitting the power button. The original remote is long gone so I am really hoping you could help. Thank you in advance for your time.
Hi Cat,
Here is another code for you to try just in case. 20490
Double check and make sure you are following all the steps.
Let me know if you are still having trouble and I’ll do what I can to help!!
Hey I have tried all the codes for my Sylvania TV model number LC320SL1 and my Sony DVD player model number DVP-SR200P and also the self code finding mode and I cant seem to get it to work… PLEASE HELP! I lost the remote to my dvd player in my move LOL Also I should add that I do not use a comcast box, just run it straight to my tv from the wall, I dont use the features of the box so I dont use it, is that why I cant get the remote to program? Please let me know what to do.
ok scratch my post I got it to turn on the tv & control the volume, but when I go to change the channel it dosnt work, the cable light flashes and it tries that… how do I fix that?
Can a Vizio soundbar, VHT 210-B, be controlled by the platinum Comcast remote?
When I try to get the remote to setup mode the tv button blinks many more that two times. I think it blinks about 5 times. I try to enter the numbers anyways and then press the channel + button and the cable buttons blinks. Is there any other way to enter the setup mode?
I found your tutorial extremely helpful. We gave a TV to my daughter without
a remote. I was able to follow your instructions very easily. Thanks.
You made an old woman feel real good about herself!
Lol! You’re very welcome Katie. Glad you were able to it programmed!
My comcast remote turns my Olevia TV on, off and can change channels. However, I can not adjust the volume – I have to use the remote from the TV – very frustrating. HELP!!
I’ve tried to program my tv using the silver remote. when I did, the only thing that works are the channels. The volume nor the power buttons work for me.
Hi Sam,
Have you tried both methods? Auto-program and manually?
If you’re still having trouble, send me your tv brand and model number and I’ll see if I can help you find a code.
I have a silver comcast remote and the instructions you posted dont match the manual. im having trouble locking in the code. instead of blinking twice when i press the setup button to lock the code. it just makes one long flash. like its caneling and i dont have the code. also you are saying press channel up and also 992 for dvd players but when i do any of those options it also cancels the search. I would very much appreciate any help you can give. i have a TruTech STS9300 dvd player i got from a goodwill with all the speakers and would like to be able to use my remote for volume. I cannot find codes anywhere. if you have some please share.
Thanks alot.
Chris.
Hi Chris,
There are actually three different silver comcast remotes. One with a red “OK” button, one with a grey “OK” button and a darker grey/silver remote. The one the tutorial is for, is the silver remote with the red “OK” button, which is pictured in the tutorial. If your instruction manual is not matching up, then I’m assuming you have a different remote. And I would suggest following the instruction that came with that particular remote.
As for codes, try these: 10451, 11661, 10092, 10672, 10019, or 10623
If those doesn’t work, try codes listed for Daewoo. I think that is that actual manufacturer of that particular brand. Also, if you do have the remote with the red “OK” button, double check your steps!!
Hope you get it working! Let me know how it goes and if I can help again.
My exit button won’t work and my remote can’t turn on or off my tv please help
